In the past few weeks, the major AI models have all shipped with autonomous agent capabilities. Opus 4.6, Gemini 3.1 Pro, GPT 5.3. These aren't incremental upgrades. These models can now work independently for hours, sometimes days, executing against specifications without checking in.
That fundamentally changes what it means to be good at prompting.
Since 2024, the prompting skill most people have been building is conversational. You open a chat window, type a request, read what comes back, adjust, try again. If you've been doing that, you've developed real, useful skills. But that approach has a ceiling, and a lot of people are hitting it right now.
These models have moved from being chat partners to being autonomous workers. And when something works independently for hours, everything you used to handle in real time, catching mistakes, filling in missing context, steering things back on track, all of that has to be built into the brief before the work begins. Not during. Before.
That's not a harder version of conversational prompting. It's a fundamentally different capability. And the gap between people who understand that distinction and people who don't is significant and growing fast.
The four disciplines
What we used to call "prompting" now covers four distinct skill sets that operate at different levels and timescales. Most people are only practising the first one. Here's the full stack, building from foundation to strategic.
The foundational skill. You write a clear instruction, include relevant examples, set guard rails, define the output format you want, and specify how to handle ambiguity. This is what most AI training covers and what most people think of when they hear "prompting."
Prompt craft is still essential, but it's now a baseline rather than a differentiator. It's the equivalent of knowing how to write a clear email. Necessary, but not enough to set you apart.

The people getting dramatically better results from AI aren't writing dramatically better prompts. They're building better context infrastructure. Their agents start each session already loaded with the right project files, the right conventions, the right constraints. The prompt itself can be straightforward because the context is doing the heavy lifting.
Context engineering gives agents the information they need. Intent engineering gives them the goals, values, trade-off hierarchies, and decision boundaries to act on that information correctly.
A major telecoms company discovered this distinction the hard way. Their AI agent handled millions of customer conversations in its first month but was optimising for speed rather than satisfaction. The information it had access to was fine. The goals it was working toward were wrong. The fallout was significant.
As you move up this stack, the consequences of getting it wrong escalate. A bad prompt wastes your morning. Bad intent engineering can affect your whole organisation.
The practice of writing documents across your organisation that autonomous agents can execute against over extended periods without human involvement. This isn't about a single prompt or a single agent's context window. It's about making your entire informational environment agent-readable.
When you're building something small, verbal instructions work. When you're building something that spans multiple sessions or teams, you need proper blueprints. Specification engineering is the discipline of writing those blueprints.

What this looks like on a real Tuesday
Two people sit down with the same AI model on the same morning. Same subscription, same capabilities. The only difference is how they think about prompting.
The first person types a request for a slide deck. The output is maybe 80% there. Some formatting issues, some content gaps. They spend 40 minutes cleaning it up. A reasonable result, because the deck would have taken two or three hours from scratch.
The second person spends about 11 minutes writing a structured specification. They define the quality bars, the formatting rules, the content requirements, and the constraints. They hand it off and go make a coffee. When they come back, the deck is done and meets every standard they set. They do the same thing for five more deliverables before lunch.
Same model. Same morning. One person saved an hour. The other person did a week's worth of output in a morning. The difference isn't intelligence or technical ability. It's that the second person was practising disciplines the first person didn't know existed.
Shopify's CEO Toby Lutke has spoken about this shift in terms of providing complete context. His view is that the core skill is stating a problem with enough surrounding information that it becomes solvable without follow-up questions. He's found that this discipline has improved his own communication as a leader, not just his AI interactions.
How our method maps to this
This isn't about clever tricks or special phrases. It's a communication discipline. And one of the interesting side effects is that organisations that get better at structuring context for AI tend to communicate better between humans too. Assumptions that used to stay hidden and play out as inefficiency start getting surfaced explicitly.
